Last Friday my whole department were taken out to lunch by the VP of sales. We ate big lunches (I had a meat lovers pizza), bowled for 2 hours and drank all we wanted at the company expense....AND I was still getting paid for the whole work day! It was awesome!

I downed 4 White Russians (the drink, not actual people) and 2 shots of something before driving home. I had a blast!

Lunch in '08

Hey everyone.

I started a new job back in Feb. I like it much better than my previous one.

I still get a 1/2 hour lunch, although I can take an hour if I choose and just work a little later.

Lunch time is still not too interesting. I've been bringing stuff from home rather than eat at the fast food joints like the good old days. A few times I've gone out to some cool places with co-workers. Last week we went to a great sushi place at the Orange Plaza. Not bad for raw fish!

Breaka-lunch

So I've been having cereal for lunch for a couple of weeks, a sin in the lunch loving world but I have to lose some weight!! So I'm having my cereal at lunchtime and I usually have a yoghurt as well and then something comes over me and I pour the yoghurt onto my cereal (dry, no milk, don't worry!) and it's a taste sensation!

Filet a fish and biggie fries Not my lunch of choice but it sure was good! I was in a hurry today, thought I could grab a quick lunch then make it to work I sometimes work as a temporary employee on Mondays and then couldn't find the place. When I called to get more specific directions the lady said Oh, were of El camino real, well it turns out there are 2 carmel mtn roads here in S. California and this would only happen to me so I told them that I could'nt make it after all Yeah !! I went for a swim in the pool instead, we are having a heat wave here today F**& them if they don't like it !! Enjoy

A rare event: A good lunch

Last Friday was a rare event for me these days...a good lunch.

Since I only get 30 minutes for lunch at my current job and there is nowhere close enough to eat at, I've been forced to bring something in a bag to work each day.

Last Friday we all had free pizza and Coke for lunch. My boss, who is normally quite annoying, treated us to pizza from Perry's Pizza. It was MUCH better than anything I ever found in my lunch bag.

I still had to pack it all in within 30 minutes.

Lunch Police

Does anyone have co-workers who much constantly inspect, smell, finger, question your lunch every day?

This is my workplace (and private Hell).

I brown bag my lunch. I don't go out and eat fast food in my cube like a gerbil like my co-workers who whine they are always broke (add it up $5/day x 25 working days)....

I eat in the lunchroom. Most days I take sandwiches, sometimes leftovers from going out to dinner, things I've actually cooked (and were edible) or the occasion my sister cooks and sends me home with food.

We have Processed Food Mary (name changed). She only eats Cup of Soup, prepackaged cheese slices, and canned ravoli. This is a professional woman who makes a good living.

Every day that she's in.. I get questioned "oh that looks so good.. where did you get that?" blah blah blah...

I'm not a small girl so I already got issues with food ya know.

The other day, my reply was "Mary, I have baloney with American Cheese" "oh I know, everything you make looks so good though".

Then there is Carmen (name changed). Carmen is our ailing co-worker. Well she's not sick with a long-term illness, she's just sick all the time. Some cough, cold, sniffle, dentists, doctors, etc. She also wore the same pair of green pants 3 days in a row to work. I wouldn't go near her on the third day. She always has to come into the lunchroom.. sniffing.. that snotty-nose (think 2 year old with a headcold) sniffling.. "oh something smells so good". Funny Carmen, we never say that when you're reheating deer meat for the 10th time in the microwave.

I forgot in my blog - the Coffee Nazi. Katherine is in charge of the kitchen (or thinks she is). You will be corrected on the proper number of napkins to use, refill the ice trays (even if you take one cube) and if something is moved, she growls and sometimes screams.

When I first started my job, I came in early one day and being the coffee whore that I am.. decided to make coffee. She came in ... starting yelling and slamming everything "you didn't wait until the "ready" light came on the coffee maker!" She was upset I was in her territory (wonder if she marks it like an animal..hmmm). She also only eats a tiny little lunch (would be good but she's not a tiny little person - not huge either - I can say this lol). More than once she has rounded the bend at 90 mph almost running into me so she can bury her Famous Amos cookie boxes in the big garbage can in the kitchen.

She also will help you clean up from any meeting with food. Which means she will be wrapping up everything, hording it like it's the Depression Era and taking it home.

We had a meeting in May and I had at least 15 wrap sandwiches leftover. I saw Katherine eyeing the inside of the fridge more than once. I came into work the next morning and there were two sandwiches left. I know where the rest went.

I was eating my lunch while trying to read the newspaper and she came in all red-faced yelling "someone moved my sandwich in the fridge". I just mumbled an "uh-huh" and kept my head down staring at the paper.

Some days.. I'd like to take my lunch and just say.. eat it will you?

Fortunately no one saw me eat the 4 leftover ribs I had from dinner last night.

I'm not angry - I'm laughing while I type this. The thoughts that run through my head and I wish I could say outloud...

But I digress.. put my head down and go back to work.

It's Seafair in Seattle this week. Yippee!
Seafair started as just a hydroplane race, but now the hydroplanes take a backseat. There's the Torchlight Parade which is strickly a big deal. And more people have contact with the Seafair Pirates/Clowns than with speed boats. The sailors, well, they boys of Capitol Hill looove a man in a uniform! But there's one element of the week-long event that EVERYONE is Sea-town gets to experience.

The Blue Angels come roarin' through town for four days, letting eveyone know what it really means to be free and how it would feel to live in some poor country that made Bushy mad this week. It starts with a distant rumble, then grows and grows til WHOOOSH! the suckers come flying overhead, then receed into another dull rumble. Sometimes you even get to see the planes too! And if you're really lucky, you'll see all four streaking from different corners of the city, uniting over Lake Washington, then flying off in formation.

I'm taking a late lunch today to watch 'em. I'll be eating a tuna salad pita sandwich with fresh avocado, tomato and lettuce from my garden.

Luck at Lunch

All the hassles were mitigated with luck at lunch today. Shitty traffic made my morning commute 45 minutes long instead of 20. Having to be in the same room as my boss. Not having any food at work and having to face the bad traffic again at noon. I forgot it as soon as I walked into a new (to me) Mexican joint and found the Netherland/Mexico game on tv! I ~love~ the world cup!
Oh, and their tacos were pretty damn good too. Not Yakima good. Not SoCal good. But better than the average Sea-town taco.

Today I celebrated the day by having a Quarter Pounder with Cheese and a Shamrock Shake at McDonald's.

I wish they would sell those shakes all year long. Nothing beats 'em!

I rarely go to McDonald's anymore. The last time I went was for breakfast back in October. I had a pretty bad hangover and didn't finish the Egg McMuffin.

Not Good For Digestion

So I'm sitting in DQ eating the Flamethrower combination and minding my own business when suddenly....

I could see this woman waiting in the drive through line. The line was at a stand still so she got out of the car and took her dog over to the grass. The dog starts taking a dump like I've never seen before. The horrible sight reminded me of those things I had as a kid that would 'pump" Play Doh out the end into various shapes.

That's not something I want to see while I eat!

I've had midday meals with many celebrities because of the industry I worked in for over a decade.

Worst: Diana Ross - She ate like a pig and sent two out of the five items she ordered back. One item was returned four times. I think she had the chef executed, but I can't prove it.

Best: James Doohan (Scotty from Star Trek) - He was like having lunch with your buddy from college. He got excited about everything we talked about. He had complements to pay to every person who stopped by our table to pay their respects. He was a gentleman and great to spend time with.

If I had to pick someone that I'd never had lunch with, it would probably be a toss up between Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Albert Einstein. Both men are gentlemen that I admire for their intelligence, wit and outspoken characters. I only hope that one day people speak of me half as well as them.

All You Need is to Fast for a month!

OMG I really can't believe how much food I've eaten over the past 3 days...I mean I always eat a lot for Turkey Day but this is ridiculous! Some friends and I went to Reno for a couple days and on Thursday we ate our dinner at a buffet...it was delicious but jesus h Christ! Then today we stopped for yet another buffet on our way out...again delicious but I think I'm going to eat nothing but tofu for a week!

Some of the things I ate today are:

Stuffing
Mac and Cheese
Caesar Salad
Carrot and Raisin salad
Tapioca pudding
Couscous salad
Waldorf Salad
Cream of Mushroom soup
Chicken Pot Pie
Chicken Fajitas
A Myriad of desserts

Needless to say I don't think I'll be eating or thinking of lunch all week!

I don't make a great deal of money. Actually, I have a pretty good salary but the state of CA, for reasons I'll abstain from expounding on, gets about 50% of it. Today, I had no lunch. Nada, nothing, nyet, nicht, zero, zip, zilch, the big bagel... until I went down to the break room. Our illustrious owner/manager had a meeting this morning with our biggest client and food was ordered. Bagels, muffins, danish, fruit... LEFTOVERS rock!

Who else thinks that free food always seems to taste extra good? Anybody with me?

Okay, so I grew up having parents who were both born in the depression. They were taught to economize, improvise and NEVER waste anything. My mother came up with some rather creative combinations for my school lunches.

Her favorite? Peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. If we had it, they also included a lettuce leaf.

Any others out there who ask, "What were they thinking?" Or even asking yourself, "I used to eat that?"

I have to be honest with all of you, I don't eat like a normal human because I had gastric bypass surgery three years ago. Since then my eating habits took a DRAMATIC turn and haven't been the same since. However, one of my favorite little luxuries hasn't changed. I love having breakfast food at lunch time. I can't have the same things as before, like breakfast burritos (can't eat tortillas) or pancakes (too many carbohydrates), but I'll mow through a few ounces of corned beef hash or even a lightly scrambled egg.

Any of you feel the urge to schedule breakfast food for your noontime repast? Speak up! Tell me what you like.

Breaking in a new one.

Well, I went to Del Taco today. I always get the number 10 with nachos instead of fries.

Normally I just walk in and they start ringing up my order. I don't have to say what i want.

Today, there was a new person at the register. She was not aware of what my usual order was. She kept entering it in wrong and became confused with my nachos substitution.

I believe that part of the training of any employee at the Del Taco in Redding should be to learn what I order before they begin working on the counter..

Am I right?

Here in Doo-Daa, KS we are fortunate to have the “Dog & Shake”.
A small locally owned hotdog, milkshake & burger joint that has all of the above mentioned things: Toasted Bun, Crinkle Fries & small tidbit ice (that bite size ice that makes cokes taste SO cold and wonderful).

Vacation Lunch!

The nice thing about going to lunch during my vacation last week was that I was not limited to an hour.

One good place that I ate at was Angelo's in Anaheim. It had been about 15 years since I had been there and it was just like I remembered. Great burgers and lovely ladies on roller skates to bring me my food. I don't think they were the same loveley ladies who were there 15 years ago.

Why can't all burger joints be like that?

My buddies and me would eat about 10 or 12 of those little burgers at a time. They were great, man!

Have you ever noticed? Conversation is all polite until you are all done eating and that's when people finally feel comfortable enough to let loose and really tell you what is on their mind?

It has been happening to me lately. I go to my one hour lunch that takes me 10 minutes to get there and 10 to get back leaving me with 40 minutes to eat. Order food, wait, eat and 25 minutes later you are done and all of a sudden the conversation gets juicy and you wish you had another half an hour to just dish and get straight to the stuff you REALLY wanted to talk about before you got to lunch with either friends or whoever...

Anyone?

"Soy Bomb!"

Greetings ALL YOU NEED IS LUNCH,

Are there any Tofu consumers here?

Recipe:
Tofu Scramble Burrito
Ingredients:
Large Tortillas
1lb. Firm Tofu-drained/cubed
1 Portobello Mushroom-cleaned/sliced
1 Small Red Onion-diced
1 Clove Garlic-minced
1 Handfull Fresh Celantro or Spinach
1 T. Olive Oil
1 Saute Pan (non-Teflon)
Pepper Sauce
Optional-Grated Tofu Pepper Jack
Procedure:
Set oven heat to Med/Low and place foil wrapped Tortillas on the center rack on plates.
Reserve the Tofu (it breaks down easily due to high water content) and saute together all of the above ingredients on High Heat a few minutes until cooked.
Add the cubed Tofu; saute for one minute; cover pan and remove from heat to steam.
Remove Tortillas from the oven and place on the plates.
Sprinkle grated Pepper Jack to cover surface.
Strain the pan ingredients (reserve the sauce) and use a slotted spoon to place a desired amount in the center of the Tortilla.
Wrap the Burrito by folding two sides together then rolling the Tortilla away from you.
Serve Burritos with a side of the reserved sauce or add a handfull of Pepper Jack on top and Broil for one minute until browned.
VOILA! TOFU SCRAMBLE BURRITO!!!

This week my fellow employees and I are stuck at work all through lunch and beyond. While our competitors ( I work in TV) are being served nasty pizza our company is feeding us quite the spread...BBQ pork, beans, slaw, potato salad, rolls, soda pop, donutes, bagels... YUM! Look forward to today's lunch.

Something funny is going on here!

I've been taking my lunch hour at 11:00 AM everyday for the sole purpose of crowd avoidence.

Today I walking into Del Taco and the place was PACKED with people. Mostly large, indecisive families ahead of me in line.

The same thing happened to me over at Taco Bell last Thursday.

What's going on here?

Are people getting hip to the 11:00 AM lunch scene? Am I going to have to start going to lunch at 10:00 AM?

Lunchtime Observations.

When I go to lunch I like to get a seat near a window. The interesting things seem to happen outside.

Wednesday, while sitting in Carl's Jr. eating a Low-Carb Six Dollar Burger, I looked across the street at the people gassing up their cars at the Arco station.

Suddenly smoke began billowing out from a '60's era Chevy pickup. People started running around not knowing what to do. Then a few people ran up with fire extinguishers and began blasting the inside of the truck cab. The smoke just kept coming!

One brave soul pushed the truck away from the gas pumps, lifted the hood and disconnected the battery. The smoke finally stopped and I finished my burger.

THEN...

Today I went to the bank after trying the new Stadium Dog Combo at Weinerschnitzel. In the bank parking lot a very old man in a very big Mercury shot forward in his parking space, crashed THROUGH a tree and slammed into the front of a pickup truck. He must have confused the gas pedal for the brake pedal!

Wow! This is a dangerous town to go to lunch in.

Forgot to Eat!

Holy cow! I thought I felt a little funny today. I forgot to eat lunch!

I was so busy today puting my old car together and getting it ready to sell that I didn't eat anything except breakfast.

I suppose I didn't feel very hungry because I was guzzling so much water all day. It was over 100 degrees again and I was working in the driveway.

I better eat 2 lunches on Monday.

Trashed Lunch Trauma!

What a miserable day!

Today I didn't get to have my lunch hour. Everyone knows that is the most important part of my day.

My boss walked up to me today and said "Yeah. It looks like I'm going to have to go to jury duty today so I'm going to need you to not take your lunch hour and keep an eye on things while I'm gone. Okay? If you could just keep the place running smoothly, that would be super. Good."

WTF! Why didn't he give me some warning? I could have made a lunch if I had to and been somewhat prepared. He springs this on me about 30 minutes before he left.

I had to run to the gas station across the street and get one of those tough-as-a-baseball-mit sandwiches they are famous for. Then I had to try and eat it as I worked.

My day was ruined!

Friday was a busy lunch hour.

I had to pick up some car parts at Kragen and go to the bank. By the time I finished those things I was left with only 20 minutes to purchase and consume my lunch.

Out of desperation I ran over to the gas station store across the street from where I work. I purchased a "deli" sandwich that had been in the refrigerator for an undetermined length of time.

The sandwich contained ham, salami and mayonaise on a bun as tough as a baseball mit. It took all my strength to tear into that thing and chew it up.

An hour later I started to feel a little funny. As a matter of fact, I had not felt that much nausia since the last time I tried to sit through a Steven Seagal movie. It was bad!

True to my nature, I did not puke. It stayed in me and swirled around for many hours.

Let this be a lesson. Never buy a sandwich from anyplace that sells gasoline and lotto tickets.

I don't feel so good...

Today I had "lunch" extra early. Some people would classify a meal at 9:30 AM as breakfast, but since it was a chili-cheesburger and fries, I'm going to call it lunch.

Anyway, I may have had a little too much booze the night before because I have felt sick all day.

I might add that I also ate a burrito and a chocolate bar for dinner.

Caution: Some food don't mix well with hangovers.

Peace and Quiet, Dammit!

When I go on my lunch hour, I like to have some peace and quiet. I really don't want to interact with others by answering questions or getting involved in a long conversation. That's what I do at work.

Whenever I go to Jimboy's Tacos in Redding, at least one employee wants to strike up a conversation with me. It seems to be a different person each time.

Today some guy cleaning the tables went on and on about the weather. Okay, I know it's hot. It's Redding. It's hotter than fire from May to September. I can't do anything about it.

This is why I rarely go to Jimboy's. I just want an hour to reset my brain before going back into battle.

Cheap ASS Lunch/Dinner!

So yesterday I was leaving my day job and going to my night job....I wasn't really super hungry at 6:00 PM but I felt like I needed a little somethin' somethin' to put in my stomach to get me through the night. But i didn't want to spend a lot of money. So I went over to the KFC/Taco Hell down the street, and ordered me a Bean Burrito Especial. Why is it so special? Not really sure, except I think it weighs 1/4 lb. so therefore it's bigger than their others. It had beans, cheese, onions, and I think that's it. and I put tons of Extra Hot sauce on it. The cost? a whopping $1.23! and it was pretty filling! Something to keep in mind when you're dead broke!!!

Perfect Lunch

Although yesterday was Monday (evil by design) I would have to classify my lunch hour as being near-perfect.

The weather was great (very rare here in Redding), traffic was light, my favorite seat was open at Del Taco, the food was ready very fast...all was peaceful in the world.

To add to the happiness, I filled up my gas tank in my car and discovered I am getting 6 MPG more than I used to before making a few improvement to the engine last week.

It was a super-spectacular lunch hour!

The Devil Made Me Eat It!

I don't know what came over me.

In spite of my doctor warning me to stay away from spicey fast food for a few days...well, I just don't know what came over me.

Friday I planned to eat a banana for lunch. Nothing more. I was driving to a hardware store during my lunch hour and suddenly a strange force turned the steering wheel and directed my car right into the parking lot of Weinerschnitzel.

Like a zombie or a man posessed, I walked in and ordered the Italian Sausage combo with a Mountain Dew. When I was finished, I went out to the car and ate the banana.

Anyone else ever defy their doctor and eat something very wrong?

Weekend luncheon

Y'know, lunch seems a little easier on weekdays. I mean, I'm at work, I need to get away from it for an hour. Often I've planned ahead and have something in the fridge. Sometimes I'm connecting with a friend for cheap eats. Whatever the case, I look forward to lunch and even plan my day around it almost.
But weekends are another story, and I'm afraid to say that lunch is sometimes left on the way side. I usually get up later then go get coffee and a pastry in the true Seattle fashion. By the time I'm into my day it's 11a.m. I start doing chores or get out and play. Next think I know it's 4p.m. -- that seems technically too late to call a meal lunch. I'll get together with friends or throw something on the grill at home and call it "dinner."

microwave fun

today at work i didn't have time to go out, so i grabbed a sandwich to eat in the office kitchenette thingy. but the difference was that i impulsively stripped off the lettuce and threw the sandwich in the microwave for 30 seconds.

the result? hot ham n swiss with red onion and tomato. i scarfed it, it was soooo good. i don't have this microwave thing at home so i'm sort of looking forward to my next working lunch.

I just got back from lunch. Greasy chinese food. I hate that I'm surrounded by greasy joints and I'm too lazy to brown bag it. Oh what I wouldn't give for a Subway.....

Anyway, I was in a bad mood. The "gotta go back to work and you're having a bad hair day" type of thing until I opened my fortune cookie:
"You will have some new clothes."

TRAGEDY AT LUNCH!

While most of the world is being distracted by meaningless news stories about the Michael Jackson case, the Pope, and the never-ending "war on terror", a real newsworthy tragedy has occurred.

WIENERSCHNITZEL HAS DISCONTINUED THE BRATWUST COMBINATION!

I walked in today and looked up at the menu and the bratwust was GONE! Stunned, I asked "what's going on here?" I was told that the bratwurst combo was gone, but that there was still enough to make one more meal. I had the last one today. The last one ever!

Some big shots up in some corporate office building someplace have now ruined my Tuesdays. What will I do? Where will I go? I'm lost. Lost, I say! I no longer have a reason to get out of bed in the morning on Tuesdays...well, except for work.

I didn't see this one coming at all. Nothing was mentioned on the evening news or the local newspaper. Even NPR missed this one. How did this happen? I blame the Republicans. I'm not sure how they did it, but I'm sure they had something to do with it.

Somebody Is Sitting In My Seat!

It's Tuesday, so I went to Del Taco.

I walked in and said "Gimme the usual, Marge." She acted all aloof like she didn't know me or what the usual was. That Marge. What a kidder!

So I got my food (the number 10 with steak instead of chicken and nachos instead of fries) and started walking toward my table. What the...? Someone was sitting at MY TABLE! Only one other person in the whole place and she takes MY TABLE.

It's the perfect table. Right next to the trash can and the exit for a fast getaway. It's also by the front window so I can keep an eye on my car.

So I start wandering around the place looking for a substitute table to sit at. I think I bumped into a wall and a few chairs and finally sat in the corner. The change was overwhelming!

Then, some guy sat down facing me at the table right next to my substitute table and started devouring his food like some sort of wild animal. Just before he finished, his bottom denture slipped out of his mouth and hit the tray.

It was awful! My whole day was ruined!

Event Lunch Strategy!

Today I attended Kool April Nights in Redding. It's a big car show and the only event in this town that does not involve alcohol, tobacco or firearms as the central theme.

Having attended more than my fair share of car shows and other similar events, I have developed the perfect lunch strategy.

Don't start searching for lunch at noon. Everyone else at the event is planning to do the same thing and they all converge on the food vendors at once. Beat the crowd and go at 11:00. You don't want to be standing in a long line when you could be enjoying the show.

An early lunch means an early trip to the restroom. Once again you avoid the crowds.

Avoid the popular food items. Most people lined up for ribs or barbeque beef sandwiches at the show today. I went for the Polish dog. No line.

Stay away from messy foods. Chances are you will be standing or sitting in a chair without a table. A messy burger or sandwich is far too easy to end up on your shirt in a situation like this. If you have an expensive camera with you, you won't want to use it with sticky, messy hands.

These people who have things altered in their meals are crazy! I mean, would you have a few parts removed from the engine of your car and still expect it to run properly?

Maximize Your Lunch Hour!

My strategy for getting the most done during my lunch hour is to take it from 11:00 to 12:00.

The rest of the world goes to lunch at noon. I avoid the crowds everyplace and I can eat in peace, do some shopping, go to the bank, head out to the lake, do my taxes...
